The story takes place within the 'Tower' an immense structure or enclosed space, divided into different regions as well as over one hundred Floors each of which is immense in scale to the point where picturing the scale of the Tower becomes almost impossible. Those who have been chosen to scale the Inner Tower are known as Regulars and occasionally someone who is not chosen will enter the Tower; they are known as Irregulars. The Regulars and Irregulars attempt to scale the Tower, passing various Tests in order to reach the top and become Rankers. Floors become more dangerous as they go up, populated with strange creatures, Guardians and the mysterious force known as Shinsoo.
