| - The umber hulk is a monster in NetHack. It is one of the few monsters which can tunnel naturally through rock (along with rock moles and woodchucks) and unique through its confusion gaze attack. Wearing a blindfold while fighting protects against this but not its other attacks. Umber hulks are the only member of the U Umber hulk monster class.
- Due to their special attack, before engaging them in melee it is advisable to first protect party members from confusion effects. Spells like Chaotic Commands, Berserker Rage or items that protect from confusion will all work. Umber Hulks are also notable for their low Hit Die, which makes them quite vulnerable to Death Spell (no save allowed) and Cloudkill (they can take a saving throw or be instantly killed).

- Umber hulks resemble beetles that move in ways similar to an ape. They have claws and mandibles, and are considered very dangerous due to their size, strength, and confusion abilities. Vox Machina has encountered umber hulks both prior to the stream and during the events in the Underdark. The first one they fought was in an underground cavern below Emon. During the fight, Grog almost permanently died when he became disoriented and fell from the top of the cavern, landing on an island almost 170 feet below. During the second encounter, the party encountered two umber hulks, which made it very difficult for the party to fight effectively as they had to split their forces in order to handle both creatures.
