Gerken's next race came in 1963, when he returned to Daytona to try to qualify for the Daytona 500. Starting 13th this go round, Gerkin struggled on this outing and finished a disappointing 24th, missing the Daytona 500. Gerken's final two races came in the 1967 season, when Gerken made his first trip to Charlotte. Starting 16th in the field, Gerken only completed two laps before crashing to last (44th). But luckily, Gerken rebounded his other start that year. At Rockingham, Gerken fought his way to the lead and led two laps before crashing late. His 15th place finish was still a career best.
