| - A smallish, flat-hoofed lowland antelope with grey skin, forked horns and glittering eyes. Preternaturally sensitive to sound and smell, it still flourished even among the grain-fields and olive groves of the Harnen and its tributaries, grazing at night and hiding from men by day. Small families of a half-dozen or fewer could suddenly hop up from behind a shrub-knot anywhere in settled Near Harad, confounding the farmer or hunter by making repeated five and ten foot leaps over stone walls, fence-rows, and any oxen, horses, or men too slow to get out of the way. Local utarf took gembuck with snares, but they did not take many. The gembuck figured in Bozishnarod folk tales as a symbol of luck and cunning, as the red fox did in Gondor and Eriador. Gembucks with Azhan blood (S.: "Kelfaen," or "fairy beasts") were said to be able to climb tall trees and take olives and dates from the top branches. They were also said to be able to mimic the songs of birds and the chirping of insects to confuse hunters. As a last resort, an enchanted animal too closely might whisper the names of his tormenter's loved ones and plant thoughts of their their deaths in his mind.
