He was a star in high school hockey in 1982-83 which led the Hartford Whalers to choose him 20th overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Jensen played with the U.S. National Team in 1983–84 as an amateur and was a member of the Olympic team that played in the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo. Jensen played about a dozen games with the Whalers before he was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Dean Evason and Peter Sidorkiewicz. He played parts of three seasons with the Capitals. He also played for the U.S. team in the 1984 Canada Cup tournament.
