The real relevance of the green elixir comes out during act two. When Elphaba is "melted", she leaves the green elixir behind for Glinda. Glinda then recalls the Wizard having an identical bottle from when they went to his palace in act one. She discovers that the Wizard is Elphaba's father, and sends him away.
