The Chappaquiddick incident was an infamous instance where Edward Kennedy, whilst at a party on Chappaquiddick island during the annual Edgartown Regatta at Martha's Vineyard, drove off the side of a wooden bridge into the harbour. Teddy survived, but his passenger Mary Jo Kopechne drowned. This event produced a spike in interest in the Kennedy assassination which many authors, including James Stevens, tryed to cash in on.
