Umbraak root is a Protoss herb native to Shakuras. Like the psionically sensitive flora on Aiur, umbraak root developed along with the Dark Templar. Growing on a world mostly devoid of flora, this herb nourished itself on energies of the void. By the end of the Brood Wars, Umbraak root was still used for ceremonial purposes despite the Zerg presence. During hunts, Protoss youths often added small amounts of extract into war paint used for face and body markings.

  • Umbraak root is a Protoss herb native to Shakuras. Like the psionically sensitive flora on Aiur, umbraak root developed along with the Dark Templar. Growing on a world mostly devoid of flora, this herb nourished itself on energies of the void. In the early stages of Dark Templar colonization, many had difficulty adapting to their planet's perpetual Twilight. This changed almost immediately once colonists found a way to extract the oil from Umbraak roots. By applying small doses to their skin, the early Dark Templars were able to find a way to draw power from the void (Naruto: Mount Myoboku; Marvel: Heart-shaped herb). After less than 100 years, the Dark Templar developed techniques to draw void energy without the herb. By the end of the Brood Wars, Umbraak root was still used for ceremonial purposes despite the Zerg presence. During hunts, Protoss youths often added small amounts of extract into war paint used for face and body markings.
