The Rebel Alliance encountered the Sardis during the Alliance's attempt to destroy the research station Obsidian. However, the Imperials had been caught unaware of the plot, and the Sardis was unable to perform to its peak efficiency either because it was unmanned, or its systems were not yet operational. The research ship was designated a primary target, and it gave no apparent defensive fire as a squadron of B-wings led by Ace Azzameen destroyed it and the station, effectively ending the program.

  • Sardis was a UEG colony located within the Inner Colonies, and part of the MacDougall 14 star system. A relatively small planet, measuring less than 3,000 kilometers in diameter, construction space on Sardis became hotly contested in the first few decades of its existence. Due to the lack of space, Sardis became one of the first colonies to heavily utilize arcologies, bunching them up together to form the planet's cities. While this method proved both efficient and popular with colonists, only particularly small colonies would utilize this system until after the Human-Covenant War.

After the Fall of Reach, Sardis briefly came under attack by a small Covenant raiding force, inflicting heavy casualties on the planet's civilian population; however, the attack was called off after a week long siege by the Prophet of Truth himself in order to reinforce his fleet currently assaulting Earth. After the war, Sardis became a major location for the resettlement of refugees displaced by the war, as well as a hub for efforts to recolonize local human worlds. Part of that involved terraforming the other planets in the system, a process that was well underway when the Created arrived to impose the Mantle of Responsibility on the galaxy. As part of their efforts to showcase their benevolent intentions, the A.I. utilized Forerunner technology to speed up the pace of terraforming, shorting the time from decades to mere years. The Created even used this technology to eliminate Sardis' tidal lock, giving the planet a proper day-night cycle, allowing the frozen side of the planet to begin melting.
