The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is a publicly owned treatment works (POTW) which treats wastewaters from domestic, commercial and industrial sources in Chicago and numerous surrounding communities. The district is believed to contribute substantial quantities of phosphorus and nitrogen to the waters of the Mississippi River.
