He played senior hockey in Edmonton for the Edmonton Dominions, Edmonton YMCA, and Edmonton Maritimers from 1911 to 1913. Matz then moved to British Columbia and played senior hockey and one game for the Vancouver Millionaires in 1914-15, winning the Stanley Cup. In 1919 Matz returned to hockey with the Edmonton Hustlers and the Dominions of the Alberta Big Four League from 1919 to 1921. He then moved to the newly-formed Western Canada Hockey League for three seasons. The Saskatoon Crescents sold him to the Montreal Canadiens in 1924.
