- Entomology was the study of insects. A biologist who specialized in this branch of biological science was known as an entomologist. Enterprise had at least two entomologists on board. When studying the rogue planet Dakala, T'Pol recommended the first survey team contain "the entomologists" and that they would move on from there. (ENT: "Rogue Planet") Jake Sisko tutored Mardah in entomology in 2370. Nog thought that she was studying "bugs" to learn how to be a chef. (DS9: "Sanctuary", "Playing God")
- Entomology (from Greek ἔντομος, entomos, "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and -λογία, -logia) is the scientific study of insects, a branch of arthropodology. At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than two-thirds of all known organisms, date back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth. It is a specialty within the field of biology. Though technically incorrect, the definition is sometimes widened to include the study of terrestrial animals in other arthropod groups or other phyla, such as arachnids, myriapods, earthworms, and slugs.
- Entomology is the scientific study of insects. Somebody who practises entomology is called an entomologist. Entomologists are often found at universities and they are mostly occupied with the study of economically inportant insects, because it is easier to get funding for research into plague species or honey-producing bees or textile producing silkworms than for a harmless little beetle that just chews some dead wood in the forest.

The upside of this is that there is still an awful lot to be discovered about practicallly any insect you care to name that is not 'economically important'. Generally even very basic information, like what it eats exactly, how many eggs it lays, how it finds a mate, and how long do the several stages of development take, is not known.
Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology, entomology is a taxon-based category; any form of scientific study in which there is a focus on insect related inquiries is, by definition, entomology. Entomology therefore includes a cross-section of topics as diverse as molecular genetics, behavior, bio-mechanics, biochemistry, systematic, physiology, developmental biology, ecology, morphology, paleontology, anthropology, robotics, agriculture, nutrition, forensic science and more.
