The Outer Colonies refer to the human colonies on the edge of Federation space. Usually these colonies are only seen on FedNet, however in Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, many of the events take place on Roku San, an Outer Colony.

- The Outer Colonies are the human-colonized planets farthest from the Inner colonies such as Earth and Reach, with colonies founded after. Until the Human-Covenant war, disorder and rebellion were commonplace. By 2536, the majority of the Outer Colonies had been glassed by the Covenant.
- The Outer Colonies were planets controlled by the Terran Confederacy. Despite a similar naming, they were a separate group of planets from the Fringe Worlds, but overlapped astrogeographically. For instance, Mar Sara was both a Fringe World and Outer Colony. By 2478, revolts were common among the Outer Colonies and were steadily growing in number. By 2499, there is evidence that the Confederacy sought to discourage settlement of the Outer Colonies.

By 2499, there is evidence that the Confederacy sought to discourage settlement of the Outer Colonies. The Outer Colonies continued to be controlled by the Terran Dominion well into the reign of Emperor Valerian Mengsk. They were represented by Senator Joss Brogan, who was arrested after hiding his criminal record.
