After competing in various tests as per the Rule of the Feather and Bowl where he proved to be superior to his brother and he recieved a feather, thus sentencing his brother to a lifetime of servitude to priests of the Cosmic Balance. However, Adam chose to leave the faith rather than become a servant. Enraged by his youngest son's actions, his father disowned Adam. Effectively making Alex the sole heir to the Faulkner estate.
