Born as Hubert Tuelly Longdon in Newark-on-Trent, he trained at RADA from 1946 to 1948 and made his stage debut in Sheffield soon moving to the West End and then the Shakespeare Memorial Company at Stratford-on-Avon. His long list of stage credits includes Medea, Treasure Hunt, As You Like It, The Sound of Murder, Golden Rivet and a run for several years in The Secretary Bird.
