He played with the junior Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. Gill was drafted 25th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Gill played in 1,007 career NHL games, scoring 82 goals and 270 assists for 352 points. He also registered 1,214 career penalty minutes. His best season was the 1992–93 season, when he scored 11 goals, 32 assists and 43 points (all career highs) while with Toronto. During the 1996 entry draft, he was traded to San Jose, where he served as their captain for two years until he was traded near the end of the 1997–1998 season to St. Louis.
