His manservant, Govinda, stands by during play with a broadsword to decapitate any players who do not understand the rules or who attempt to cheat. Purcell hosts a game to which he invites Middleman Guy Goddard and Wendy Watson, playing under the aliases "Harry Rule" and the "Contessa Caroline di Contini". In the course of the game, Anatol Gogol cheats, and Purcell orders his murder. Wendy intervenes, and before anyone can attack, the Middleman arrives and stuns them all with a Concussive Stun Field Generator.
