Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, born 1947 was a prominent if controversial Mujaheddin commander during the wars with the Soviets, after the war he fought with Ahmad Shah Massoud's Mujaheddin in Kabul, but he was defeated and fled to Iran when Dostum's forces joined with Massoud's. He later attempted to overthrow Hamid Karzai's government with the aid of the Hazaras, but was captured and sentenced to death for treason. This was later commuted to life imprisonment. He has expressed support for Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.
