Cranes expanded greatly with the booming post was road transport industry and built aluminum bodied boxvans to the designs of the American Fruehauf Corporation from the mid 1960s. The company was involved in a number of mergers and acquisitions during the 1970s and 80s. Consolidation in the industry saw a Monopolies commission inquiry undertaken in the 1980s into the UK body building and trailer market. In 1997 they were taken over by General Trailers and the factory in Norfolk shut in 2005, after the firm collapsed. The Fruehauf brand name carried on under new owners.
