Henri Vert was a French spy in the employ of Italian gun-maker Giovan Antonio Beretta. Vert was sent to Grantville to gain information about percussion cap guns. Under the alias Heinrich Grün, and claiming to be a Lutheran, he was employed by Ape and Monkey Hart, who ran a primer and percussion business. While so employed, he earned the mocking nickname "Pickles" by the Hart brothers for the English translation of his undercover name: "Heinz Green". His stay in the town was entirely unsatisfactory to the devoted Catholic Vert, as he felt he was among a "nest of heretics."

  • Henri Vert was a French spy in the employ of Italian gun-maker Giovan Antonio Beretta. His stay in the town was entirely unsatisfactory to the devoted Catholic Vert, as he felt he was among a "nest of heretics." Vert eventually learned the process of making fulminate of mercury, a critical component of a percussion cap. During the winter holiday season in December 1633, Vert packed up samples of mercury fulminate and made his way out of Grantville. However, he accidentally dropped the package and causing the contents within to explode near his abdomen, killing him instantly. His death was investigated by officers Marvin Tipton and Jurgen Neubert, after which they ruled his death to be "Death by Misadventure" (or subtly "Death by Stupidity" as stated by Police Chief Dan Frost).
