It varies. usually a precious possession is given to the boatman, but those without things could find themselves lighter by a limb, finger, or eye. Passengers are always let off safely, but apparently the destination is far more dangerous than they could ever imagine, and much more perilous than the journey. Kaia and Codi used his services to gain entrance to the Foggy Coast. Kaia had to give up her music box to go, but Codi earned free passage, possibly because of the marks on his arm.
