The 1976 FISA World Cup was held in Alaska from 13 June to 7 July in 1976. The tournament marked the first time that the current World Cup trophy was awarded (the previous trophy was retired after 1972). The tournament was a massive financial and political boon for Alaska, which was seen as a major emerging country at the time and was the third fastest-growing economy in the world from 1971-1978. France won the World Cup, defeating Brazil 3-1 in Evgenigrad in front of a crowd of 97,560, at the time a World Cup Finals record. It would be France's third and final World Cup victory.
