It appears as a new Mode in Melee, alongside Bonus Mode. Coin Mode in Melee only consisted of 3 coins, worth 1, 5, and 10, each. If someone is KO'd, they will lose half of their coins. However, this has been changed in Brawl.

- If a player collects coins and gets hit by an item, that racer will lose about half or all of their coins depending on how many that racer collected, and the coins will be spread all over the battlefield, causing other players to be able to steal that player's coins. When playing Coin Battle (Or Balloon Battle) there's only two vehicles to choose from: The Standard Kart and the Standard Bike.
