Hurley played for the Boston College men's ice hockey as well as the US national team at the 1968 Winter Olympics and 1967 World Championship tournament. He turned pro in 1968-69 after Boston College finished its season and played one game for the Boston Bruins. It turned out to be the only NHL game that Hurley would play. He spent three seasons in the Bruins' farm system. In the WHA Hurley played in 311 games, scoring 10 goals and 76 assists.
