A network motif is a building block for a complex network. Network motifs are information processing structures that are statistically dominant. They occur in the "real" network that is under investigation significantly more frequently than in a comparable random network, i.e. an Erdös-Renyi-network with the same number of nodes and vertices. Examples of typical network motifs are feedback circuits, lateral inhibition and antagonistic redundancy.
