The 1st Hungarian SS-Sturmjager Regiment is believed to have been made up of approximately 500 Hungarian volunteers who joined the SS after Germany occupied the country in 1944. Raised on 8 January 1945 by the merging of the first and second Hungarian battalions, the Regiment was attached to IV SS Panzer Korps, serving under the command of the 5 SS Panzer Division "Wiking". The Panzer Korps had been transferred from France to Hungary, but could do little to stop the advancing Soviet Armies.
