| - The axis mundi, Latin for "pole of the world", also known as the also cosmic axis, world pillar and center of the world, is a ubiquitous symbol that crosses human cultures. The image expresses a point of connection between sky and earth where the four compass directions meet--a point that expresses a unity in how human beings experience space. From a spiritual perspective, this is the point in which travel and correspondence is made between higher and lower realms. The axis represents the space where God (the vertical) is accessible to man, who lives in the world (the horizontal). The axis mundi is therefore central in the design of churches and shrines. In Asian cultures, the axis mundi is often represented by the Bodhi Tree, Mount Fuji, and the Kunlun Mountains. In the Christian tradition, Jacob's Ladder, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, the Holy Cross, and the Garden of Eden are all seen as representations of the axis mundi. Native American cultures viewed the black hills as an axis mundi--likewise, central American civilizations constructed temples such as the ones at Teotihuacán to represent the ascension of man to heaven.

Het begrip axis mundi komt in vrijwel alle culturen op aarde voor, maar schijnt vooral een uitdrukkelijke rol te spelen in wereldculturen waar sjamanisme en animisme de boventoon houden, dus de oudste. Men neemt aan dat het concept door Eurazië is verbreid als onderdeel van een Proto-Indo-Europese religie. Het gaat dan meer in het bijzonder om de levensboom, die in zijn essentiële vorm van stam wordt weergegeven. In de mythologie van Noordwest-Europa is dit Yggdrasil. Vandaag is het begrip nog steeds bekend in de vorm van de esculaap, de staf van Asklepias, en de vergelijkbare caduceus. De axis mundi is dus niet enkel een verbinding maar ook een verbindingspad voor wie de techniek beheerst om het te bereizen. In de tantrische yoga wordt hiervan een inwendige replica gezien in de kundalini. Vaak wordt de axis mundi verzinnebeeld als een touw naar de hemel, of een ladder (zoals de Jacobsladder), een pilaar of staf, een wijnrank of een boom. Jaïnistische tempels hebben een heel smalle hoge zuil in het binnengedeelte staan, die de axis mundi verzinnebeeldt. Afhankelijk van de context van het geloofssysteem wordt de axis mundi hetzij als typisch vrouwelijk hetzij typisch mannelijk beschouwd. In het laatste geval raakt het concept ook met het fallussymbool vereenzelvigd.
