This cruiser class was the first in a long line of similar ships that later became known as the Town class. They were designed as multi-purpose ships for escort and patrol duty, either with the fleet or a convoy. Their armament was relatively light, with only two 6" guns and a number of 4" guns, and they tended to be rather unsteady gun platforms. Still, they were considered a success, and they became the model for several following classes of British light cruisers. All ships were laid down in 1909 and entered service in 1910.
