  • Shrek 2 is a 2014 American computer-animated comedy fantasy adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Ronnie del Carmen and Lee Unkrich, it serves as a sequel to 2012's Shrek. In the film, Shrek and Fiona are on a journey to Far, Far Away Land to visit Fiona's parents. Shrek's in-laws aren't too thrilled that a crude ogre is married to their beloved daughter, so the battle for acceptance ensues, all the while the nefarious Fairy Goodmother appears. Many of the original characters and voices from Shrek return for this sequel, and several new characters—including the Puss in Boots (Oscar Isaac), King Harold (voiced by Ian McKellen), Queen Lillian (voiced by Helen Mirren), Fairy Goodmother (voiced by Michelle Pfeiffer) and Prince Charming (voiced by Aaron Taylor-Johnson)—are introduced. Despite production struggles, Shrek 2 opened in November 2014 to wildly successful box office numbers, eventually grossing over $819 million, and received universal acclaim from critics. Shrek 2 has been considered by critics to be one of the few sequels to outshine the original, and it continues to be featured frequently on lists of the greatest animated films ever made. The film has seen multiple home media releases and a theatrical 3-D re-release in 2021. The film's success led to the release of Shrek 3 (2017), which was also critically and commercially successful.
