He played junior hockey for the Calgary Centennials and was chosen 50th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. Patenaude turned pro with the Amarillo Wranglers in 1970-71 and played with the Fort Wayne Komets in 1971-72. In 1972 he junped to the Alberta Oilers of the World Hockey Association and scored 29 goals in the 1972-73 season. Patenaude went on to enjoy four more very good years with the renamed Edmonton Oilers before being accquired by the Indianapolis Racers in 1977. He played the 1977-78 season with the Racers and then retired.
