In the period before the outbreak of the Derlavaian War, Bembo tried to court her (as did others of her male fellow police officers) but was roughly rebuffed. When he was sent to occupation duty in Forthweg, Bembo lost track of Saffa. When he returned wounded from the war, she softened, consented to start a relationship and moved in with him. However, when Bembo proved unfaithful and had casual sex with a prostitute (a story which immediately became a major item of the police force's gossip) Saffa was extremely angry and severed the relationship forthwith.
