Ishizaki became the world's oldest recognized man following the death of 113-year-old Walter Richardson on 25 December 1998. He became Japan's oldest person following the death of Yasu Akino on 12 February 1999, who was 113 years, 348 days. Ishizaki died at the age of 112 years, 191 days from multiple organ failure, as the ninth-oldest living person in the world.
