Raphael I was the Patriarch of Constantinople for a year from 1475 to 1476. Other than his relationship with the patriarchate, little is known of Raphel's life. Raphael was of Serbian origin. Through the assistance of Mara Brankovic (who also was of Serbian origin and a stepmother of Mehmed II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire), he replaced Symeon I as patriarch. Allegedly, Raphael obtained the patriarchate by offering to pay 2,500 sequins. However, he could not raise the sum and was forced, while chained hand and foot, to beg for the money from his flock. He was not successful and was then thrown in prison, where he died.
