Fishing skills have been developed to a high degree by the angler heron. This bird creates shallow ponds at the water's edge in the shade of overhanging trees by scraping at the river bottom and constructing shallow dams. On the shore nearby it accumulates a heap of droppings and fish remains to attract beetles and flies. These it then picks up and drops into the shallow water to entice the fish into its pond, where they are easily caught.
