A very rare borate mineral which, in the real world, was discovered in Myanmar in the 1950s. For Warehouse purposes, however, it infuses the entire Warehouse structure, causing any who carry the chemical injected into them, like James MacPherson, to have their blood turn acidic and consume them from within. The only known antidote is the mineral necklace MacPherson wore whilst 'invading' the Warehouse with H.G. Wells.

- Painite is a mineral which can be refined into a gem. It has a rather interesting history compared to other minerals. It was first discovered by Arthur C.D. Pain in 1956 in the Mogok Stone Tract located in Burma (now called Myanmar). Until 2005, it was so rare, specimens were individually numbered. At the time, there were only 18 specimens known, with 4 of those specimens being found in 2001, and 2 in November 2004. Only 2 of the specimens were crafted into gemstones. In February or March 2005, a deposit with over 100 Painite specimens was found. This caused Painite to lose its status as one of the 10 rarest gems in the world. Painite was the rarest gem in the world prior to this discovery, including when it was added to FFXI (2002).

Painite produces a brown-colored gem and as a mineral it is a dark brown-red to a dark orange-red. It has a hardness similar to Topaz and its crystalline structure is hexagonal. Painite's composition is CaZrBAl9O18 and contains traces of chromium, iron, and vanadium.
