Needle ice or frost columns is a phenomenon similar to frost flowers. As well as the latter, it is not a form of hoar frost. It occurs when the temperature of the soil is above zero but the surface temperature is below 0 °C. The subterranan moisture is brought to the surface via capillary action and then freezes.
