  • Bast, or Bastet was the Egyptian goddess of cats, war, protection, family and music, worshiped as early as the 2nd Dynasty (2890 BC). She was represented as a woman with a cat's head, or as a full cat (or in earlier times, a lioness). In earlier times she was chiefly a warrior goddess, but over time as the Egyptian religion unified and Sekhmet began taking her place, during the 22nd Dynasty (c. 945–715 BC), Bast had transformed from a lioness warrior deity into a major protector deity represented as a cat. Her main center of worship was the city of Bubastis.

  • In Bast's first recorded appearance in Vertigo continuity, she appeared among a host of other characters belonging to various mythical pantheons of deities. Along with fellow Egyptian god Anubis, she attended the summit held by Morpheus to decide who would be given the key to Hell. During this event, she was goaded into a confrontation with the Norse god Thor, although she bested him. Later, Bast approached Morpheus, asking him to give the Egyptian contingent to the meeting in exchange for information on where to find his brother Destruction, although she didn't know the exact location of the prodigal Endless (as Destruction is referred to). Ultimately, Morpheus declined Bast's offer and she and her fellow Egyptian deities departed. Much later, Bast attempted to use the world's cats to en
  • Bast's bonuses are economic; two of her technologies increase resource gather rates. Note though that wood is usually not important to the Egyptians until the Heroic Age, when siege weapons (such as the Catapult) appear, but in water maps the Adze of Wepwawet is extremelly important, as Laborers can gather extra wood for Fishing Ships or Kebenit rushes. Her Myth Unit, the Sphinx, is a powerful Classical Age unit, especially when fully upgraded to a Hieracosphinx. These are fast and have excellent crush attack, meaning they can take out units and buildings alike in rushes.
  • She was once a major goddess, but the loss of her believers over time has significantly reduced her powers. She is quite flirtatious with Dream when she appeared in the Dreaming during The Season of Mists, and seems to have previously developed a mutual attraction with him which ultimately came to nothing. He sometimes goes to her for advice or companionship. Dream is almost affectionate with her, and in her own words, she adores him.
