Genbu (ゲンブ, Genbu) is an ancient, large and powerful turtle. Hailed as the Island Turtle (島亀, Shimagame), Genbu is widely accepted as the leader of the turtle species. On his back resides his subjects as well as countless other animals. Genbu resides in the Land of Lightning, where he and his people are cared for by Kumogakure. In return, he allows the shinobi to train within the environment upon the shell on his back.

abstract	Genbu (ゲンブ, Genbu) is an ancient, large and powerful turtle. Hailed as the Island Turtle (島亀, Shimagame), Genbu is widely accepted as the leader of the turtle species. On his back resides his subjects as well as countless other animals. Genbu resides in the Land of Lightning, where he and his people are cared for by Kumogakure. In return, he allows the shinobi to train within the environment upon the shell on his back. Genbu was not always as popular and important as he is in the present day. From birth centuries ago, he was considered the runt of his family. After an attack by a poacher organization, he got separated from his family and was left to fend for himself. Alone, it was a miracle he was able to survive. Eventually he met Gamamaru and his life changed forever. Embarking on a quest to save the world, Genbu, alongside Gamamaru and other recruits, acted as the world's protectors after Hagoromo's passing and Hamura's ascent to the moon. Taking the responsibility of being the world's safeguards, they served it well. After a series of events though, Genbu eventually retired to the Lightning Country. With the disbandment of the group Genbu was a part of, the world broke into the Warring States, a period of chaos that remained for centuries. With Konoha's creation, Genbu was instrumental in establishing the village of the Lightning, Kumogakure. Ever since, he's been a precious and prized animal, one that continues to watch over his species and all of the Lightning Country.
