The game allows users to use three separate layers to create stereoscopic 3D animations, which can be exported into GIF or AVI format, and features six colors compared to the previous version's two. The application was used to make mock-ups of upcoming Pikmin cartoon. Animations can be uploaded to two different Flipnote Galleries; Friends, which can be shared amongst friends, and World, a paid community service which allows users to share animations with others around the world. Flipnote Studio fue lanzada con dos opciones online Flipnote Gallery: Friends y Flipnote Gallery: World. La aplicación fue lanzada en Japón el 24 de julio de 2013. Estaba originalmente preparado para el 1 de agosto de 2013 en Europa y un poco más tarde en América, pero por el "increíble uso" de Japón, la aplicación tuvo que ser retrasada en ambas regiones hasta un año y medio después, cuando Nintendo anunció que la recibirían en Febrero de 2015 si fueran miembros del Club Nintendo.
