It serves as a prequel to The Subspace Emissary, and answers many questions about the Smash Bros. series, including the truth behind Master Hand, Crazy Hand, and Master Core, as well as what the Final Destination stage really is. Smash's biggest story mode to date, it boasts many improvements over The Subspace Emissary. These improvements include:
* Play as all the Super Smash Bros. Revolution characters in their quest, with the exception of Paper Mario, Toon Link, and Jigglypuff, who you can unlock in secret areas, and the Mii Fighters, though you can use them after the story is complete.
* Up to 4 players can play (Levels with less than 4 characters available will use palette swaps of the characters)
* Gameplay is no longer centered around player one, but on all the players. This means while things can get chaotic, everyone has a say in where to go.
* Although it is a 2D side-scroll, The Great Commission comes very close to having an open world. After the main story mode is completed, players are free to explore the worlds of their favorite characters.
* Several hidden areas exist which have challenges (see below), as well as hidden characters you can fight and unlock (Toon Link, Jigglypuff, Paper Mario).
