A Dark Lord of the Sith was the most powerful of all Sith, hence his position in an order. All Sith under him would be considered Sith Lords, regardless whether it was one apprentice or an entire group of them. This continues for many decades until the rise of Darth Bane who believed in the rule of two. Before him there were many Sith lords who wield the force. They were powerful in their own right, though they killed themselves to often for any of them to be supreme. This was one of the factors that lead to the continuous fall of the Sith.
  • The title, Dark Lord of the Sith, is the highest rank a Sith can achieve. In traditional Star Wars canon, there is only one Dark Lord at a time. Darth Bane's Rule of Two is eschewed, however, in the Jedi vs Sith Universe, as it is viewed as impractical and impossible, especially given the title of the application.
  • Dark Lord of the Sith was the title originally bestowd upon the ruler of the Sith Empire. The title was sometimes given to one or more individuals at the same time, such is the case with Darth Nihilus, Darth Sion and (formerly) Darth Traya and also with Darth Revan and Darth Malak. It is also a title that is granted to the twelve members of the Dark Council upon joining. According to Sith Titles, "Dark Lord” is synonymous with the term "Sith Lord" which is granted to Siths who have advanced in the order’s hierarchy.

It is also a title that is granted to the twelve members of the Dark Council upon joining. The title of Dark Lord of the Sith, or Jen'ari in the Sith language, originally referred to the ruler of the Sith Empire, and later was taken by the recognized leader of the Order of the Sith Lords. Before Kaan, there was only one Dark Lord of the Sith at a time, who was the head of the Order, with the exception of the members of the Dark Council of the Sith Emperor Vitiate's Sith Empire who held the title of Dark Lord at the same time. In more recent periods, it was a title shared by multiple individuals simultaneously. The term referred to individuals of both sexes, though Lumiya claimed the title of Dark Lady of the Sith. The title "Dark Lord of the Sith" is often thought to be synonymous with the title "Darth". Contrary to this, however, is the fact that Sith apprentices have been known to carry the title as well. Two examples would be Darth Malak as Darth Revan's apprentice, and Darth Vader as apprentice to Darth Sidious. Many Sith Lords have used the "Darth" title, but there is no evidence as to the synonymic relationship of these two appellations. According to Sith Titles, "Dark Lord” is synonymous with the term "Sith Lord" which is granted to Siths who have advanced in the order’s hierarchy.

The term referred to individuals of both sexes. The title Dark Lord of the Sith is often thought to be synonymous with the title Darth, but this is purely conjecture and has not been properly substantiated. Many Sith Lords have used the Darth title, but there is no evidence as to the synonymity of these two appellations. The title of Dark Lord was possibly comparable to that of a Jedi Grand Master. The first Dark Lord of the Sith was the leader of the exiled Dark Jedi who, after their defeat in the Hundred Year Darkness conquered the Sith species and ruled over them as gods. Xendor, believed to be the first Dark Jedi, is possibly the predecessor of the Dark Lords of the Sith, though he himself was never a Sith Lord. After the fall of the Sith Empire, Naga Sadow gave the title to his apprentice, Freedon Nadd. The spirit of the dead Dark Lord Marka Ragnos then declared Nadd’s apprentice, Exar Kun, Dark Lord of the Sith. 3,000 years later, Lord Kaan began the practice of giving the title to all members of the Order, thus making it a title shared by many Sith for the first time in their long history. After the institution of the Rule of Two, the title was naturally held by only two members at a time, one being the Sith Master and the other being the Sith Apprentice. In recent times, after the destruction of the Order of the Sith Lords, the title fell out of use as the Sith were effectively extinct. However, in 8 ABY, Bacharan Valak claimed the title after years of extensive studies in the Sith arts. He took on several apprentices, training them in the dark arts. Only his last apprentice, Vassily Korolov would become a Sith. In late [[15 ABY], the title would be claimed by two men, Darth Malign and Darth Venger, one working inside the Galactic Empire, the other in the mysterious, New Sith Order.

Darth Bane's Rule of Two is eschewed, however, in the Jedi vs Sith Universe, as it is viewed as impractical and impossible, especially given the title of the application. Dark Lords of the Sith supposedly have greater scope of powers and higher levels of mastery thereof than any of the subordinate ranks, but this is often a very subtle (and sometimes nonexistent) advantage in battle. Additionally, Dark Lords will train lesser Sith and are often the main members behind factions, in order to gain more power for themselves.

They were powerful in their own right, though they killed themselves to often for any of them to be supreme. This was one of the factors that lead to the continuous fall of the Sith. It should be noted that although there were many real Dark Lords of the Sith, many of them were self-proclaimed and never actually followed the traditions of the Sith, such as overthrowing the previous Dark Lord of the Sith. The name calling varied, but some of these Sith were called Pretenders. These Sith were known as false or pretenders because they claimed the power of the Sith on their own, rather than by tradition, which, in the eyes of real Sith followers and prophecies, made them false. Originally, the Sith were a group of Dark Jedi that crash landed on Ziost and integrated with the Sith species, which led to the name "Sith." The Sith Order grew and grew, until it was believed to have been brought down following the New Sith Wars, with the fall of the Brotherhood of Darkness. However, the Sith Lord Darth Bane survived with his apprentice, Darth Zannah, which was the beginning of the Rule of Two. It was actually Darth Revan's holocron that taught Bane the theory, which led to many years of secretive planning by the Order of the Sith Lords, which eventually led to the formation of the First Galactic Empire, by Darth Sidious and Darth Vader. When they were destroyed, they were the last of the real Sith Lords, and any who followed were in fact referred to as pretenders.
