The name of the dynasty and the state originates from a steep Stuttgart hill, close to Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. Now the region is part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. In 1633, Duke Eberhard III, who had just been declared to be of age, brought Württemberg into the Thirty Years' War as an ally of Sweden. After the battle of Nördlingen in 1634, Imperial troops occupied the duchy.
