The Shiranai Clan (知らない一族, Shiranai no Ichizoku) was a powerful ninja clan of Sunagakure, holder of a Kekkei Tōtta: the Coal Release. Since the founding of Sunagakure, the Shinarai clan was allied of the First Kazekage. Due to an exchange of favors and some enemies of Sunagakure eliminated for alleged "tamers of coal," the clan managed to settle in the rich mines of the Land of Wind in the west part of Sunagakure. Over the years, the Shinarai clan's ninja specialize in techniques of mining and smelting the coal. During the technological revolution in Sunagakure, the Shinarai clan's ninja were who created the first steam-powered locomotive, carrying people from the border with the Land of Rivers to the Land of Stone.

Over the years, the Shinarai clan's ninja specialize in techniques of mining and smelting the coal. During the technological revolution in Sunagakure, the Shinarai clan's ninja were who created the first steam-powered locomotive, carrying people from the border with the Land of Rivers to the Land of Stone. However, diplomatic and friendly relations between the Shinarai clan and the Kazekages were shattered when a group of Coal Release users ninjas tried a coup d'etat against the Second Kazekage. But the coup was thwarted and the shinobi who survived were banished from Sunagakure. Most of these Missing-nins have become criminals or bounty hunters. A smaller part decided to abandon the life as ninja. And an even smaller portion joined Taikutsuna and allied themselves to Ishigakure in the Land of Stone, which restored a new colony of the Shinarai clan.
