The tavern was owned by William Douglass until his death in 1752, and the property was passed to his daughter Catherine Kerr and nephew Cornelius Douglass. From 1754 onwards, the Green Dragon Tavern was a meeting place for the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order, after Haytham Kenway's arrival to the British colonies in North America. In 1766, the tavern was bought by the Freemasons and renamed "The Freemasons Arms"; since the sign above the door was still a green dragon, people kept using the Green Dragon Tavern name. Catherine stayed on as the innkeeper.
