Jane disliked the Race immensely; Australia had been thoroughly crushed during its invasion, but she knew she couldn't fight them directly. Instead, she decided to learn everything she could from them, and then find a way into a country not ruled by the Race. This strategy had its risks. The Russie College was a legitimate target during the several Muslim uprisings that came in the wake of the arrival of the Race's Colonization Fleet. Later, when the Race decided to make worship of its emperors a term of continued attendance in the school, Jane had to decide between her faith and her education. An indifferent Anglican at best, Jane agreed to go to the shrine the Race had built. For a time, Reuven took a romantic interest in Jane. He invited her to dinner with his family on occasion, and the two dated off and on in the mid-1960s, even becoming physical. However, their differing faiths and ethnicities kept them from being more committed to one another. Upon graduation, Jane secured a position as a doctor in Edmonton, Canada. Reuven chose not to follow her there. After setting up shop, she met and became engaged to Hal Walsh, a manager at the Saskatchewan River Widget Works. In an interesting coincidence, she treated one of Walsh's co-workers, David Goldfarb, a second-cousin of Reuven Russie's. She even recorded some phrases for one of Goldfarb's inventions, the Furry.
