  • When activating this spell, the targeted ally is usually surrounded by a red or orange light, and their physical attack power is raised. This is most useful for melee-based characters that fight on the frontlines, increasing their damage against enemy targets, while magic-based characters are typically unable to take advantage of this stat increase due to their focus on spellcasting.

In Tales of Symphonia, Raine Sage eventually learns either Acuteness or Keenness after repeated usage of Sharpness, depending on which arte branch she is heading toward. In Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, the usage requirement is the same, but the class will learn only Acuteness. The usage requirement was removed in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2. In Tales of the Abyss, if the spell is used within a fully-charged Fire or Light FOF Circle, it will change into Blaze Emitter. In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, the spell is Fire-elemental, thus influencing the Elemental Grid when used. In the PlayStation 3 port of Tales of Vesperia, Sharpness is one of the spells that Patty Fleur's arte Risky Cast may randomly cast. In Tales of Xillia, Sharpness is changed for the first time in the series and given the added property of raising magical attack as well as physical attack, eliminating the need for a separate spell to raise the former.

File:Shells.jpg At the start of the quest, a weapon will start with its maximum sharpness level. With each successful hit, the weapon's sharpness is reduced, until it shifts to a lower level. (with the exception of the Gunlances' Shelling and Wyvern's Fire, which always reduce sharpness). How long your weapon remains in a level of sharpness is dictated by the length of the respective color, visible in the weapon's details page.
