In 1604 he returned to Mainz, and the following year was made a member of the cathedral chapter. Aselm then studied law for two years in Padua. In 1608 the Archbishop of Mainz John Schweikhard of Kronberg made him a court advisor, and the following year was made the president of the court (a position he held until 1618). From 1620 until 1622 he was a rector of the University of Mainz. Anselm's quick rise led to a strained relationship with John Schweikhard, and he ensured after his death in 1626 that Anselm was not elected Archbishop. After the new archbishop, George Frederick of Greiffenclau, died in 1629, Anselm was elected the Archbishop on 6 June by a chapter resisting the Emperor-sponsored candidates. On 28 January 1630 he was confirmed by Rome. At the Imperial Diet in Regensburg (1630), Anselm came under the influence of John Reinhard of Metternich and abandoned the neutrality policy of his predecessors in the Thirty Years' War by taking an active pro-Imperial position. After Tilly was defeated at the Battle of Breitenfeld, King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden moved against Mainz and captured the city at Christmas in 1631. Anselm and the majority of the aristocracy and clerics had already fled to Cologne. Anselm did not return until 22 June 1636 after the city defended by 3,000 Swedes was recaptured by Imperial troops during December of 1635. After receiving priest and bishop consecrations, he crowned Ferdinand III in Regensburg in December of 1636. He then moved against the Protestants which had settled in the territory of the Archbishopric during the Swedish occupation. In 1644 the French captured Mainz and Anselm fled to Frankfurt. In 1647 he signed a peace treaty with the French but was banned from returning to the city. Anselm died in October 1647 in Frankfurt.
