One of the most popular forms of fanart has always been icons. Initially, these were small in size (often only 32px square), and primarily used as decoration on webpages. Since the advent of journaling sites such as LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, however, larger icons (typically 100px square) have been employed as visual identifiers for users, a.k.a. userpics or avatars.
