The company was founded by Flemming Frederiksen and Jens Terp-Nielsen in 1953 as a sack making company, but following a dispute over usage of the company car became wholly owned by Jens. In 1956 the company was named Saekko and in 2003, along with its daughter companies were collectively renamed the Abena group.
