The Dinosaur King made a deal with the Wailing Sisters of Witchery World, convincing them to create a floating staircase up to the Skyrock Mountains and a Power Jar that would keep the stairs in place. Advance troops were then sent to the mountains to cause havoc, with dinosaurs terrorising cosmologists, philosophers and poets and eating their homes. In order not to let things get out of hand, cosmologist Lukout sent for warrior Shion to help. The pair found their way to Ghost World by magic handkerchief, falling asleep after passing through the Sleep Clouds that shield the world. They encountered Wordsmith, a Skyrock resident carried to Ghost World by quetzacoatlus and the three of them set off to investigate the dino problem. Their journeys took them through grassy plains, a small ghost town containing Tom's Trading Post and Supply Emporium, a lush jungle and into Dinotown, the dinosaur stronghold. A showdown involving genies, spell boxes and a Stone to Flesh wand led to a brainwashed Dinosaur King taking the heroes back to the staircase, allowing them to climb it and destroy it, ending any future invasions.

It was originally serialized in issues #11–18 (June 1993 – March 1997) of Clowes's comic book series Eightball, and was first published in book form in 1997 by Fantagraphics Books. A commercial and critical success, it was very popular with teenage audiences on its initial release and developed into a cult classic. Ghost World follows the day-to-day lives of best friends Enid Coleslaw and Rebecca Doppelmeyer, two cynical, pseudo-intellectual, and intermittently witty teenage girls recently graduated from High school in the early 1990s. They spend their days wandering aimlessly around their unnamed American town, criticizing Popular culture and the people they encounter while wondering what they will do for the rest of their days. As the comic progresses and Enid and Rebecca make the transition into adulthood, the two develop tensions and drift apart. A darkly written comic, with intermittently sombre explorations of friendship and modern life, Ghost World has become renowned for its frank treatment of adolescence. The comic's success led to a movie adaptation of the same name, released in 2001 to critical acclaim and numerous nominations, including a nomination for the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay, written by Clowes and Terry Zwigoff.
